St. Maarten/St. Martin

Located just south of Anguilla and south/south-east of the British Virgin Islands, this is one Caribbean island with a difference. The southern half called Sint Maarten belongs to the Dutch, while the northern part (Saint Martin) belongs to the French. Both halves, as we've discovered, are quite spectacular. It's small: only 34 square miles. Despite its size, the island can boast of over 30 beautiful beaches. You'll also find rolling hills, two capital towns (Marigot and Philipsburg), an international airport named after a princess, and an international mix of people. One surprise? You can use U.S. dollars in most situations. Another surprise? Many people speak at least some English. St. Maarten/St. Martin is known as "the friendly island," and for good reason!
