Kiawah Island: Natural Beauty Just Outside of Charleston

May 20, 2019

Just 30 minutes from Charleston, South Carolina, Kiawah Island attracts vacationers from near and far with its pristine natural beauty. It’s the kind of place where you can ride your bike along the tideline for miles, or catch sight of dolphins playing in the surf from the comfort of your beach lounger.

If Kiawah Island rings a bell, you may recognize it from the PGA Championships. Kiawah’s Ocean Course hosted the PGA in 2012 and is scheduled to once again in 2021. This breathtaking course has the most seaside holes of any course in North America, and it’s one of the island’s five championship courses.

But it’s not just golfers who have found a lot to love about this special Southern getaway. Sun-seekers and surf-lovers adore its 11 miles of pristine beach. Adventurers flock to the island for its 30 miles of bike trails which including paths through marsh, along the beach, and to the island’s village.

Whether you’re a dedicated wildlife watcher or just someone who appreciates the peace and quiet that Mother Nature has to offer, Kiawah’s untouched beauty is bound to delight and surprise you. Pedal out to the marsh towers or to Eagle Point for stunning views of the marshlands, or just watch the tide from your spot on the beach.

Kiawah Island is home to a thriving wildlife population. It's not uncommon to witness white-tail deer prancing along the surf early in the morning, or to see golfers taking a break on the green as a gator crosses. Endangered Loggerhead turtles nest on Kiawah's 10-mile-long beach, and in the late summer, it's fun to watch as hatchlings make their first trip down to the water.

When you're not exploring the marshlands or splashing in the surf, the Kiawah community puts on a full calendar of events, from oyster roasts and crab races to movies on the green. Barbecues at Mingo Point are a quintessential Kiawah experience, and Kamp Kiawah offers a way for kids to get out and explore the island while parents kick back and have the day to themselves.

At the heart of Kiawah is FreshFields Village, a market that's the island's version of a Main Street. Here, you'll find an array of restaurants ranging from sports bars to French fine dining as well as charming boutiques and spa services.

For a truly blissful Kiawah experience, book a vacation rental for your stay. Kiawah Island Getaways offers a collection of oceanfront rentals where you can kick back in coastal chic living areas and watch the waves roll. Or choose a scenic-view rental and sip afternoon cocktails in the shade of palmettos while watching herons and gulls swoop across the marshlands.
