Intriguing Dominica: the Calibishie Cove eco-hotel
Have you heard of Dominica? (Pronounced Doe-men-NEEK-ca) Maybe you're lucky enough to have been to this small isle located about halfway down the Caribbean chain, north of St. Lucia and Martinique. Or maybe, like the Island Runaways, you've heard good things about this West Indian country and started dreaming of a tropical island getaway. For travelers and explorers who want to get off the beaten track and discover a green, lush destination brimming with nature, birds, plants, and flowers -- but not a lot of development -- Dominica sounds amazing. And one eco-boutique hotel that we've hard about seems like an ideal place to headquarter, and it's called: Calibishie Cove.

Not far from Dominica's airport, on the northeastern edge of the island, you'll find Calibishie Cove. Located 80 feet above Hodges Bay beach, the hotel commands beautiful views of the surrounding scenery -- and the Caribbean Sea.

You won't be sharing this gorgeous paradise with crowds of other guests. The hotel contains only two rooms and two suites, which ensures that there's plenty of space and privacy. (Sounds like a great place for a honeymoon or an anniversary!) I can understand why Coastal Living magazine praised the hotel as having the best view in Dominica...

Want to really indulge? Get their penthouse suite, with 1500 square feet of space, panoramic views, and your own plunge pool. Staying at Calibishe Cove means that you have a kitchen staff dedicated to providing meals only for the hotel's guests. Want dinner on your private balcony? No problem. Need a tasty lunch packed up to go for your day's exploring? They are happy to oblige.

You know what else sounds good to me? Little thoughtful perks, such as free wireless, free use of a local cell phone, breakfast included, and free use of their snorkeling equipment. In this day and age of add-on resort fees, it's refreshing to see one hotel taking a different approach.

Apparently, the staff are glad to help you plan your own sight-seeing. On the other hand, if you prefer for a guide to show you the sights, Calibishie Cove can arrange private tours to Dominica's waterfalls, a boat trip and secluded beach lunch, a kayaking or tubing adventure, a variety of hikes through the rainforest, fishing, and plenty of other excursions.

Not every traveler makes it to Dominica, and perhaps that is part of its appeal. It's not the Caribbean destination for every tourist: it's a place for those who want to savor the authentic side of the islands. To find themselves on a beautiful and empty beach. To experience nature in all its lush, tropical glory. The Island Runaways have long wanted to get to Dominica. Now, in looking at these photos and descriptions of Calibishie Cove, I think we've discovered a perfect base for a future Dominican Island Runaway.
