Island Style: Sea Bags for the beach

As our fellow island lovers know, we Island Runaways are crazy for anything and everything "island style." Board shorts, jewelry, flip flops, you name it, we're always on the lookout for good looking products that really say "island." So we were really intrigued when we came across this:

These are Sea Bags, beautifully crafted bags meant to be carried to the beach, onboard a boat, for a weekend, and most definitely on an island escape. Their size allows you to carry all the essentials: beach towels, sunscreen, water, and a juicy read. And the more we learn about the company which manufactures them, the more we like them!

It turns out that Sea Bags are handcrafted in the United States, specifically in Maine, a state famous for its sea-going heritage. Each bag is made out of recycled sails, giving these totes a real sailing pedigree. I understand if you visit their flagstore store in Portland, Maine you can watch skilled craftspeople constructing the bags at sewing machines and splicing rope handles by hand.

Did you know, by the way, that the Maine Coastal Island Registry lists 3166 coastal islands? Off the coast of Maine you will find more than exist in the Caribbean! I would bet that folks carrying Sea Bags (and their pets) have visited more than a few of these northeastern islands.

The company also creates duffle bags, wristlets, toiletry bags, laptop covers, and one-of-a-kind bags. These handcrafted bags aren't meant to be used one year, and then discarded. Because they have been made with care, Sea Bags are intended to last for a long, long time.

The company takes its recycling mission seriously. They will trade Sea Bags for sails you want to recycle; they will even arrange to pick up and ship your used sail! I now know what gift to give any sailors I know. But these incredibly charming, neat-looking totes aren't simply for the boating crowd. I can imagine carrying one on an island runaway to St. Martin or the British Virgin Islands. Talk about island chic.

The only difficulty I foresee? Trying to select one design from all the appealing graphics. That's a tough decision. I love this company's values and their aesthetic. It's really gratifying to see such handsome, quality items being fabricated in my own country, the U.S. of A. If you're interested in seeing more of their line, visit their website or do what we've done, like their Facebook page. They also post loads of photos that make us want to get out on the water.
