New Year's Day, 2015, and Zickie and I are lucky enough to be on an Island Runaway to Grenada. Neither of us have ever been here before, so there are loads of discoveries to make! Added to that excitement is the fact that it's our wedding anniversary, and let's just say, we are ready to celebrate!
Our first foray away from the hotel: to stroll Grande Anse beach, a 3 kilometer stretch of sand south of the capital, St. George's, on the western coast of the "Spice Island." Intending on stopping by Umbrellas beach bar for a cold Carib beer and a bite to eat, we were discouraged by a long wait for a table. Exploration took us down by the Flamboyant Hotel, to The Owl. Here couples and families sat around in the shade, as they savored the views.
At last Zickie enjoyed a New Year Day's rum and tonic, while I had my Carib beer, brewed just a few miles up the road in a factory we drove past a bit earlier on the way to Grande Anse.
The scenery looked so appealing, it was difficult to study the menu. In the end, we ordered a few things. Best of the lot? A roti, which is an Indian roti bread wrapped around a mild curry (in this case, chicken, but you can also get vegetarian rotis, conch rotis, and so on). The mix of spices in the curry tasted just right. (Zickie had become a huge fan of roti when he lived on Trinidad, so he was pleasantly surprised to find these wraps of curry goodness on Grenada.)
We'd heard that The Owl was a happening place, but most of the party animals were most likely still recovering from New Year's Eve. A couple of ladies played pool for a while, but eventually, the indoor bar itself emptied out. The out-of-doors proved impossible to resist.
After lunch, we snapped some photos to share with you, our fellow island lovers. The beauty of Grande Anse beach was something special, and we'll do a longer post on this amazing expanse of shoreline soon. Is Grenada a good place for a Caribbean getaway? So far, our take is: oh, yeah!
From the southern Caribbean, Zickie and I wish you all a wonderful, warm, and sunny 2015. Cheers from Grenada, fellow Island Runaways!
