Runaway Beach: Rating Punta Cana’s Sand & Sea

How do you rate a beach? Is it the sand: whether it’s pure white, beige, black from volcanic rock, or even a pale blush pink? Or maybe your heart lies in the ocean, with clear water shot through with mesmerizing streaks of aqua green, sapphire blue, and deep turquoise. This Island Runaways duo has seen our share of beautiful beaches, from Jamaica to Thailand, Corsica to Greece.

Island Runaways

So, today, just for you, our fellow island runaways and escape artists, we are hard at work researching…Punta Cana in the Dominican Republic. To be more precise, we’re exploring the shore along Bávaro, a resort area a bit to the north of Punta Cana town, on the eastern coast of Hispaniola island.

Caribbean beach

Today it’s breezy (probably the distant effects of Hurricane Gonzalo), with patches of fluffy white clouds in a pale cornflower blue sky. The intensity of this particular greeny-turquoise-y-aqua ocean just won’t quit. Literally, it’s difficult to stop staring. If you glance away, when you look back, it’s hard to believe that the sea truly appears THAT gorgeous.

Dominican Republic

The sea feels warm and inviting -- not too hot, not too cool. Just...right. There's a little ripple on the water, but otherwise, no real waves to speak of. A very soothing experience.

And the sand? Honestly, it’s some of the softest sand we’ve ever felt between our toes. It doesn’t squeak as you walk through it (which some soft sands do). Instead, it just gently cushions your feet and toes. What a relaxing, marvelous feeling.

Punta Cana

People had told us Punta Cana has beautiful beaches, but you hear that about a lot of tropical destinations. And in fact, in the Caribbean there are indeed hundreds of wonderful spots to lounge and play in the ocean.

But our “research project” here in the DR has left us convinced: Punta Cana really does rank right up there with the very best.

Punta Cana beaches

What’s your opinion, Island Runaway friends? Have you ever experienced the Dominican Republic’s sand and sea? And if so, how would you rate it?

Well, now it’s time to leave the laptop behind and get back to the beach! Cheers, and talk to you soon.
